Review of the Montoy 50027 Land Rover Discovery Building Block Set

Hey brick fans!

The other day I popped into my local Dollarama discount store and saw some new building block sets in the toy aisle.

There were some little truck sets for $5 each.  The white one looks like a Mercedes Benz G-wagon and the green one looks like a Land Rover Discovery.  There were also a couple of motorcycle sets going for the same price.  To round it off, there were also some $3 sets featuring a small police car and a police helicopter.

Both of the trucks seem to be built the same way with minor roof and front grill differences.  Both are blocky and feature large wheels and wide fender flares.  Even the part count is similar.

In this review I will look exclusively at the Land Rover Discovery model.

Brand: Montoy, sold by Dollarama
Age Rating: 6+
Number of pieces: 266
Model: 50027
Lego Compatible: Yes
Minifigures: No
Printed Parts: No
Stickers: Yes
Retail cost: $5 CDN

The box is way bigger than it needs to be.  Inside there are four bags of parts numbered 50027-1 thru 50027-4.

The numbers don't correspond to any of the instructions though.

Instructions are provided on a large double sided piece of paper.  The pictures are rather small and hard to make out, especially the black coloured parts.

There are a total of 45 steps that make up the construction and 2 steps for sticker application.

The small sticker sheet has 4 stickers.

I opened up all of the bags and dumped them onto the table.  Mostly sand green and black pieces with a few white parts.

Brick clutch is decent however there are noticeable differences in the sand green bricks used.

The Land Rover is seven studs wide and if you include the fenders, the truck is 9 studs wide.

The roof is mostly white with dark tinted windows and some roof racks.

The interior has a steering wheel, and instrument panel, and two seats.  There's also a spare tire attached to the back.  There aren't any opening doors on the vehicle.

These were the leftover spare parts.

I didn't apply any of the the four stickers provided.

In summary, the $5 dollar truck is pretty good value for  being Lego compatible and having 266 pieces. It rolls well, and the only con is the colour differences in the sand green bricks used.

I think the truck is just a bit larger than minifig scale, probably due to the oversized wheels.   Let me know what you think of this cheap little truck set.  Is it worth $5?   I'll do a review of the white G-Wagon in my next post.

Thanks for looking!   Bye.
