Review of the Exclusive JMBricklayer 50002 Western Train Station Bookends Set

Hey brick fans, it's review time again!

We will be doing a deep dive on this new JMBricklayer Fantastic Idea Western Train Station Bookend set 50002, whoa what a mouthful!

Today's review is brought to you by JMBricklayer, who provided the set.   Huge thanks! Their motto is Joy Makes Brilliance.  JMBricklayer is a leading provider of Lego compatible building block sets.  They have a wide range of themed sets such as Sci-fi, Medieval, Ships, Trains, Vehicles and too many more to list.  Feel free to check out their website:  JMBricklayer.com.  Using my affiliate code ITSNOTLEGO15%, you can save an extra 15% off on your purchases (some exceptions apply).

Oh darn, those contracted delivery people in Canada sure do like to toss the packages around!  Luckily JMBricklayer sets all come in their sturdy boxes, so although the box may not be salvageable, the contents were all nice and safe.

Here are some details of the set we are reviewing today.   It's a very unique set that I've never seen before.  It's a very cool steampunk style train station that comes complete with steam engine and passenger car.
This set could easily be built over one weekend and it was very enjoyable to see all of the special features.

Unboxing

Despite the bad shape of the box, everything inside it was A-OK!

Lots of colourful bags.

There's actually train parts and track for this set!  These parts came in an un-numbered bag.

The 91 page instruction booklet wasn't even damaged at all!

There are four sections in the manual and their are corresponding numbered bags for the parts, so this should be an easy build.  I found the instructions to be clear and concise.

Section 1.

We will start off building one of the bookends in Section 1.

You will need to collect all of the bags numbered 1, there are seven of them.

With all of these gears and circular pieces, it's very clear that this is going to be steampunk themed!

A very nice assortment of printed pieces.

I love all of the shiny pipes and handles.

Yup, can pretty much say it's steampunk!

The signage reads Welcome to the West and Ride the Rails to Adventure.

Even more signs!

This is first section completed.

So many cool details around the station tunnel entrance.

Section 2.

Look for the four bags marked 2 on the stripe for this section.

A nice assortment of gold plated parts with the set number printed on some of them.

We will make a train car out of all these pieces.

It appears to be a dining car complete with seating and a table with a golden tea pot.

The train car looks great in the dark green accented by gold.  The roof attaches directly to the side walls, meaning you can't easily remove the roof to see the interior.

The train wheel assembly is complete with magnets on either end which means you could feasibly put these on other train sets.

The train car fits perfectly onto the tracks and into the tunnel.
Here's a different view.

Section 3.

Time to build the other side of the bookend.

I counted 8 bags of parts for section3.  I wonder why the bags aren't all the same colour though?

Parts dump for this section.

I found this weird deformed piece amongst the parts!

Printed parts that say West Railway Station and Joy Makes Brilliance, the motto for JMBricklayer.  Could it be that this set is exclusive to JMBricklayer?   It's a little hard to see and I wish the logo stood out better.

Several more gears, with steam rising on the roof of the train station.  The gears are connected so that if you turn one, the others move too.

Here's the view looking head on.  Again we have track which is standard sized, so it could be connected to other Lego compatible track.

Section 4.

The last step is the Steam train locomotive.

Seven bags are used for section 4.  If you are counting that makes 23 numbered bags + 1 un-numbered bags for a total of 24 bags of parts.

I like that there are printed parts in every step of the train station bookend set.

Here are all of the parts for this section.

A bit small but still a very convincing looking locomotive steam engine.  The gold parts really, especially around the smoke stack look really good.  I found that the cylinders near the train cabin had a bit of a staying on, but other than that brick clutch and finish of the bricks was excellent.

The Western Train bookend set doesn't come with any minifigures, so I placed some of my own with it so you can see that the train is approximately minifig scale.   Anyone notice the special JMB lettering on the front of the train?

The dark green and gold colour scheme really complements each other.

All aboard, who's going aboard!   Tickets, please have your tickets ready.

You don't need to keep the steam train in the station for display, because the train looks great even on it's own.

After you're done building, you may find that you have some extra pieces.  Hopefully, I didn't leave anything off!

The finished train station bookend set with some of my books.  Doesn't it look great?  I think it would make a great gift idea for anyone who is a fan of trains and books!

Final Thoughts

I like that the train is Lego compatible and minifgure scale.  The train is fun and easy to put together and the Western Steampunk theme is great.  The colour scheme is great and all of the gold accents and printed bricks were a nice bonus.  Priced at only $59.99 USD, this set is a great value.  I highly recommend this set for the reasons above!

Don't forget to visit the JMBricklayer store to see this and many more cool building block sets and add some to  your collection.

Thanks for looking and see you next time, bye!
