A closer look at the Cada Kitty's Grocery Store C66015W Building Set

Hey building block fans, here's my look at the latest Cada Japanese themed building set.  It's the 921 piece Kitty's Grocery Store C66015W.  This set from Cada is new for 2023 and it came out at the same time as the Japanese Canteen set C66014W.  The set is currently on sale at Afobrick for $48 USD with free shipping.

Afobrick generously sent me this and other sets with Japanese themes for review! Their online store, in operation for approximately two years, boasts an extensive collection of Lego-compatible building block sets. With highly competitive prices and complimentary worldwide shipping, Afobrick provides a compelling option for enthusiasts. You can enjoy a 5% discount at checkout using the special code "itsnotlego."

Update:  Special holiday promos now in effect, check the Afobrick.com website for more details!

My delightful niece took charge of assembling the set and capturing the progress through most of the pictures. I'll delve into the details and share my thoughts at the conclusion of this blog post.

The set contents are comprehensive, excluding the box to minimize shipping costs.

The inclusion of numerous stickers enhances the set, and my niece found joy in applying each one.

The construction of Kitty's Grocery store unfolds in two sections – the first floor and second floor – as indicated in the manual and corresponding numbered bags. Consistent with other Cada Japanese-themed builds, this set includes a USB-powered LED light.

A girl minifigure, likely named Kitty, is part of the set, requiring assembly. She sports pink overalls with a charming kitty face.

There are nine bags of parts for section 1.

And seven bags for section 2.

Extra pieces, baseplates, a minifigure, and a light brick are also included.

The floor of Kitty's Grocery store features a vibrant pattern via a sticker.

Adding bric-a-brac, setting up the checkout counter, and arranging cabinets, chairs, dishes, hats, and surprise items brings the interior to life. Books and magazines are tucked under the counter.

Walls are erected around the interior, offering flags and handbags for sale.

A functional sliding door graces the side of the grocery store.

The front entrance showcases three large windows and a doorway, featuring the store's cat mascot in one of the windows.

The hinged rear wall allows you to open it up and peek into the interior of the grocery store.

Here's the shop interior with the back wall closed up.

The second floor hosts a small sitting area for tea service. The floor can slide back into the shop, and a peculiar fish pond sticker, included but omitted, adds an interesting touch.

Here's another view of the second floor interior.

The awning, sliding forward on sunny days, is a noteworthy feature.

An old sakura tree, grown into the shop, adds character to the side of the grocery store.

Front and center, a variety of nifty items are on display for sale, accompanied by abundant signage.

Here are my observations regarding the new Cada Grocery store set.

The appearance of the store is aesthetically pleasing; however, I would categorize it more as an extra supply store rather than a grocery store. This categorization may be somewhat misleading, given the absence of typical grocery items such as food or beverages. Although I appreciate the diverse range of items available for purchase, it doesn't align with the concept of a traditional grocery store.

The color scheme is appealing, and I'm pleased to see the reuse of unique roof tiles, previously featured in the Cada Japanese Tea shop in a blue color. The green tiled roof provides a striking contrast to the pink cherry blossom flowers.   Brick clutch and quality is excellent.

The set exhibits vibrant colors, particularly with the utilization of stickers. The overall appeal could have been enhanced if Cada opted for printed pieces instead of stickers.

The inclusion of a sliding side door and an opening back wall offers an excellent view of the interior of the shop, especially considering that the second floor cannot be detached independently from the first floor.

The second floor boasts two noteworthy features. Firstly, the entire floor can be slid from inside to outside, adding an interactive element. Additionally, there is an awning that can be opened and closed, contributing to the set's overall versatility.

Nevertheless, I observe that the second-floor height is inadequate for a minifigure to stand upright, let alone sit comfortably.  It should be at least two studs higher in my opinion.

Therefore, here are a few adjustments I would propose to enhance this set:

- Position the grocery store on a standard 16x32 baseplate.
- Transfer the old sakura tree to the backyard.
- Enable the second floor to be detached from the first floor.
- Allow the roof to be separated from the second floor.
- Increase the height of the second floor.

Despite my little annoyances, I would still highly recommend this little building to anyone who likes modular buildings and Japanese themed sets.
My rating for this set is therefore 4.1 out of 5.
