I Got to Preview the New Lego Compatible FunWhole Newsstand Building Block Set!

Hey brick fans! I'm excited to present the latest Funwhole set simply called the Newsstand F9023. It's got a lovely Parisian vibe and would look great in your Lego city.

A huge shoutout to the folks at FunWhole for providing me wth an advance set to review!  As of right now, the Newsstand is available for pre-order from the FunWhole Amazon stores.

Jump to the bottom of this post to find out about the special limited time promotion happening right now for the Newsstand!

I absolutely love that FunWhole sends you the boxed set, unlike a lot of third party online retailers who just ship you the building block sets in generic plastic bags.  You must agree that the artwork on the box is amazing to look at.  Other information on the box displays the set number F9023 and the piece count of 556 pieces.  Age rating is 8+.

It's a smaller box, but the set is packed full of goodies.  I counted 11 bags of parts and 2 orange lighting pouches in the set.

Having built other FunWhole sets, I can attest to the fact that the instructions are always clear and concise.  The provided 120 page manual feels very high quality to the touch.

All FunWhole building block sets include LED light kits and this set is no exception.  Pictured above are the lighting components that come with the Newsstand set. In the orange pouch labelled #1, there is a street lamp and in pouch #2 is a small battery pack, a USB plug, an LED light and a 4 socket hub to connect all the wires together.   No batteries are provided in the set, so you will need to provide your own. As I don't have any watch batteries, I used one of my AA battery packs from another FunWhole set to power the lighting for the newsstand.

Pro Tip: Make sure you test each of the lighting components first before installing them into your set.  If there are any faulty pieces, I like that you can reach out to FunWhole to get a replacement for the defective piece.

While Lego sets are moving more and more away from printed parts and towards the use of stickers, FunWhole appears to be moving in the opposite direction.  In this set alone, there are over 29 printed pieces, wow!

There are four steps involved in the constructing the newsstand.

Step 1

Step 1 builds the base of the news kiosk and places the lamp post on it.

Step 1 is looking good so far!

Step 2

Step 2 will build the front of the Newsstand as we can see in the manual.

Step 2 uses three bags of parts.  Don't worry all of the parts bags with the exception of the baseplate bag are numbered according to the step usage.

Here are some of those printed pieces I showed you earlier.  In hindsight, the only thing I would leave out is the telephone on the counter, it kind of looks out of place.  I do like the cold beverage display a lot though.

The awning in front of the kiosk can extend outwards or retract back in depending how you want to display the set.  Customers of the newsstand don't have to worry about getting wet during rainy days.

Step 3

In step 3, the remainder of the newsstand is built up.

Two bags of parts are used in step 3, along with some of the lighting components shown earlier.

We find displays on either side of the newsstand, and the circular one rotates to display two different ads.  There is a back door that is the entrance for the proprietor of the shop.

On the back wall is where you mount an LED brick and it is super bright!  It has no problem lighting up the interior and all of the displays within.

Step 4

For Step 4, we will build the roof and add further adornments to complete the newsstand.

The spired dome on the roof and dark green colour is so reminiscent of newsstands one can find on the streets of Paris.

There are planter boxes and possibly two small seats, a fire hydrant out in front.  There's an extra magazine rack and umbrella for sale on the corner of the kiosk.  You might need that umbrella if the seagull decides to poop on you!

I guess I should have parked the blue scooter on the street instead of on the sidewalk.

Final thoughts

I think FunWhole really knocked it out of the park with the Newsstand set.  For those who haven't yet experienced building with FunWhole, this set makes the perfect introduction to the brand.  At 556 pieces it's very manageable for any novice builders and the lighting kit is not so complex to figure out.

Whoa, I almost forgot to mention that FunWhole even provides a minifigure who is the proprietor of the Newsstand.  According to the intro in the manual his name is Albert and he is 70 years old and loves to read.

You have to fully assemble Albert yourself and he's not compatible with other Lego style minifigures.  If you want to be consistent you can always just add your own minifigures to the set and they will work well.

Does the FunWhole Newsstand display well with your modular city?  I think it does!  I highly recommend this set to anyone who wants to give FunWhole a try.  I give it 5 out of 5 stars (ok, -0.1 for the telephone).
